Story of the World

Mulberry School is opening enrollment for their history classes to interested homeschooling families. Students will explore history through stories and hands-on activities based on the curriculum of Susan Wise Bauer's The Story of the World. The classes meet from 2:00-3:00 PM (1 hr) every other Monday. Each section will be offered in semesters and students may enroll for one semester or both.

Story of the World - Part I
    (Ages 6-7, appropriate for 1st and 2nd graders)
Semester 1: Old Kingdom Egypt - The Babylonians
     Sept. 14-Dec 14; Cost $70
Students will learn about everyday life in Egypt, Mesopotamia and Babylonia as well as about the events of this time that shaped history. They will practice hieroglyphics and cuneiform, learn about mummification, and the code of laws set down by Hammurabi.

Semester 2: The Assyrians - New Kingdom Egypt
     Jan. 25-May 19; Cost $70
This semester will start with learning and acting out the story of Gilgamesh. We will then visit the ancient kingdom of Mohenjo-Daro in India, hear folk tales from Africa, explore pictograms from ancient China and come back to Egypt to learn about the only female pharaoh and the young pharaoh King Tut.

Story of the World - Part II
    (Ages 7-8, appropriate for 2nd and 3rd graders)
Semester 1: The Fall of Rome - The Dynasties of the East
     Sept. 21- Dec. 7; Cost $60
During the first semester students will see the glory of the Roman Empire fade, hear the stories of both Beowolf from Britain and Sinbad from Persia, create an illuminated manuscript, learn about the rise of Islam, and discover the great dynasties of China and Japan.

Semester 2: The Kingdom of the Franks - Genghis Khan and the Moguls
     Jan. 11 - May 17; Cost $80
Students will hear the stories of Charlemagne, the Vikings, the Crusades, Richard the Lionhearted and Genghis Khan. We will learn about Norse mythology, get a sense of life in a castle, and study the codes of chivalry and the samurai.
